Deptford Twp. Petition - VOTE FOR MAYOR
Deptford Township was formed on June 1, 1695, and was known initially as Bethlehem. It was incorporated as the Township of Deptford on February 21, 1798. The township form is the oldest form of municipal government in New Jersey. Designed to parallel the New England Township meeting, the Township Act of 1899 abolished the township meeting and replaced it with a township committee with all municipal powers. This act, with a handful of amendments, served until it was repealed by the Township Act of 1989, which cleared up many of the ambiguities of the previous law.
Deptford Township operates under the Faulkner Act, formally known as the Optional Municipal Charter Law, under the Council-Manager form of municipal government. The township is one of 42 (of the 564) municipalities in New Jersey that uses this form of government.
We the residents of this township have been electing the Council and then at the township's Reorganization/Reorg, they will vote among themselves who will be the Mayor until the next Reorg, for many decades.
For the last 2-plus decades, the council has voted for the same individual to be our mayor. Would you like to choose who you want to be your Mayor as most mayors are in Gloucester County, New Jersey, the United States of America, and the world?
We petition the charter of Deptford Township, governed by the Council-Manager Plan, be amended, as permitted under that plan, to provide for the mayor's election directly by the municipality's voters. Currently, the residents DO NOT vote independently for their mayor. The elected council appoints who they want as the mayor at each reorganization meeting.
If you would like to and think that it is long overdue to be able to vote for the mayor of Deptford Township, then please select the Button, go to or meet at the following locations to sign a petition to be placed on the upcoming election as a question for the residents to vote for this change for our township elected officials.
